Want to learn who you can team up with to address work place violence in your health care setting? Join Karen Garvey as she provides a national overview of work place violence and the key people you need to work with to address it.

Violence in health care has been reported for several decades but significantly escalated to a fever pitch during and after the COVID pandemic. Increased aggression has been reported in media outlets with emphasis not only in health care but also largely in the airline industry where it was necessary to introduce monetary fines for those violating the rules to better protect their employees and the traveling public. The noted increase in societal aggression now enters the doors of all health care organizations and beyond areas that notably encounter the issue, Emergency Medicine and Behavioral Health; other areas where our workforce may not have the knowledge or skills to manage the situation. This presentation will identify challenges faced by a public safety net organization, inclusive of acute and ambulatory care and the correctional health setting.

Learning Obectives:

  • 1. Recognize the extent of the issue on a national scale and its impact on health care.
  • 2. Identify key persons in their organization to partner with to address workplace violence.
  • 3. Describe data elements to synthesize to obtain a global health system view of the issue.
  • 4. Align the elements of WPV to the principles of enterprise risk management (ERM).
