This session instructs experienced risk professionals on ways they can stay ahead of the hardening insurance market by examining how excess pricing is determined and teaching them about the use of alternative program structures to mitigate the increased cost.

This session begins with an exercise on excess medical malpractice trend development, including what factors are analyzed and how they are applied, to predict how the cost of insurance may continue to rise. Next, we examine several alternative program structures that can be implemented to help mitigate the increased cost of insurance to health care organizations. Lastly, we analyze case studies to evaluate the effectiveness of the alternative risk programs.

Objectives:

  • • Identify how excess medical malpractice trends are developed, including what factors are analyzed and how they are applied.
  • • Evaluate internal claims and risk management programs for opportunities to mitigate insurance costs.
  • • Examine three insurance programs and invite the participants to help select the best structure.
